Wasp Life Cycle.

In spring, the queen’s leave their over winter places and seek suitable nesting sites. Having selected a site, the queen will start to Build a nest; she constructs the nest by chewing small pieces of wood mixed with saliva to create a paper like substance. This is then shaped into a small nest.

The nest contains cells in which the eggs are laid, the grub’s hatch and are fed by the queen. By June the new adult wasps take over duties of building the nest and feeding the grubs. Wasps feed on other insects such as flies and spiders so can be beneficial to the environment but they will also attack and kill colonies of bees.

Nest building continues throughout the summer, by October the colony can consist of 20,000 workers. During late summer, New Queens are produced and fertilised, the young queens leave the nest to find a suitable place to over winter. Workers continue to be active until the onset of cold weather, in 2008 wasps were active in Leeds until mid November. before the onset of the colder weather wasps will forage for sugary foods such as fruit, ice lollys, pop etc. this is a time when many stings occur. One particular hazard is when a wasp enters an unattended drinks can. The wasp sting causes swelling and makes breathing difficult.
