Bats can live for up to 30 years they are very intelligent mammals.
Fourteen species of bat are resident in the UK, the most common species is the Pipistrelle.
 
Bats feed on insects which are caught in flight or picked up from water on the ground or in foliage. A single bat will eat around 3000 insects a night. Bats are capable of reproducing from the age of two they will produce a single offspring each year.

Bats have very poor vision but have a highly developed sense of hearing, by emitting high frequency sounds they are able to navigate in complete darkness.
 
Bats will use a variety of roosting sites at different times of the year and are often found in homes and outbuildings.

It is illegal to intentionally kill, injure or handle a bat and to damage, destroy or obstruct access to any place which is used by bats for shelter and protection or to disturb a bat while it is occupying such a place. If bats or bat droppings are discovered in your home or outbuildings the best advice is to leave the area undisturbed.
